Our continuous commitment to more sustainable palm oil production is paying off, as our Progress Report for 2023 underlines. In addition to a review of the self-commitment, a trial survey of the newly imposed additional criteria was carried out for the first time for the reporting year. Beyond certification, our members are thus also addressing a wide range of further challenges in palm oil production, such as promoting biodiversity and supporting small-scale producers in global supply chains. Particularly noteworthy is the target achievement of 99% certified palm oil, an important step towards 100% sustainable production.
Our self-commitment: taking responsibility
FONAP members have clearly committed to using 100% certified sustainable palm oil, palm kernel oil and their derivatives and fractions. Through this self-commitment they actively advocate environmentally friendly and fair cultivation methods. They create transparency in their supply chains and enter into dialogue with their suppliers in order to ensure traceability and the implementation of strict sustainability standards.
Additional criteria: thinking sustainability further
In addition to complying with recognised certification standards, FONAP members have imposed further demanding additional criteria on themselves. The new additional criteria, which FONAP adopted in 2022, were surveyed in the Progress Report 2023 for the first time. These include the protection of biodiversity, support for small-scale producers in the global supply chain, and compliance with human rights due diligence obligations.
Our target achievement 2023
In 2023, the members almost fully met the target of their self-commitment: 99% of the palm oil volumes they used in their products were certified in the correct supply chain options. Target achievement in the current reporting year is thus even higher than in the previous year 2022 (98.6%). Non-certified palm oil and palm kernel oil was offset by the members through the purchase of smallholder certificates. In this way, FONAP members make a direct contribution to supporting small-scale producers and promoting sustainable practices.
Progress Report 2023
Our Progress Report 2023 provides a detailed insight into the steps FONAP and its members have taken to make the palm oil supply chain more sustainable. The report shows: 100% certified palm oil on the German market is possible! Through their ambitious self-commitment, FONAP members are frontrunners on the way to sustainable and fair palm oil production.
