FONAP has published a new practice-oriented guide for private-sector actors in buyer markets: “Human Rights in Palm Oil Supply Chains – A Practical Recommendation Guide”.
The guide was produced in response to the findings of the FONAP network project “Collective Intel for Good: Collective Intel for Human Rights Due Diligence” and draws on research in Guatemala, Indonesia and Malaysia.
It contains ten practical recommendations for purchasing companies – including the shift from audit-based compliance towards context-specific, participatory human rights due diligence; prioritising the most severe risks in the areas of labour rights, land rights and the protection of migrant workers; and the call for supply chain transparency beyond the first tier.
The central message: certification is useful, but it does not replace effective human rights due diligence.
FONAP brings together companies, civil society organisations and public institutions committed to greater sustainability in palm oil supply chains. Through the new affiliate membership in the Sustainable Coconut Partnership, FONAP is extending its engagement to a related commodity sector with similar challenges and potential in the area of sustainability.
The partnership aims to promote the exchange of best practices, strengthen cross-sector dialogue and support greater coherence in approaches to sustainable and deforestation-free supply chains.
This step underlines the growing importance of cooperation between commodity initiatives in order to promote more effective and better aligned sustainability measures at global level.
