The FONAP members\u2019 project provided support to smallholders in the region to transition to sustainable farming practices, while contributing to reforestation efforts and water protection. The project was located in the buffer zone of the Bukit Tiga Puluh National Park on Sumatra, a vital sanctuary for endangered species, such as the Sumatran orangutan. The project was successfully completed in September 2024.   <\/p><p> <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1771e4b elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"1771e4b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Strengthening local communities and protecting rivers and landscapes<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f779a92 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f779a92\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>After the first phase ended in March 2023 and following a transition phase, the project moved into its second phase in September 2023, with the additional cooperation of KOLTIVA. FONAP promoted sustainable landscape management through social forestry, with smallholders planting crops on 17 hectares of land that contributed to reforestation and provided economic benefits. These actions were intended to improve the long-term income opportunities of the participating smallholders. In the second phase, 107 smallholders received training to enhance their organizational and planning capabilities. In total, over 2,000 coffee and light-nut tree seedlings, along with about 200 fruit trees, were planted as part of the reforestation efforts.     <\/p><figure id=\"attachment_7676\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7676\" style=\"width: 1160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7676 size-full-thumb\" src=\"https:\/\/forumpalmoel.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Text-1160x700.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1160\" height=\"700\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7676\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">KP3 Nurul Huda members Ratna Wati (left) and cooperative chairwoman Mevi Ayati (right) present the cooperative\u2019s certificate.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Supporting women in their livelihoods was another key focus of the project. In the first phase, three women\u2019s groups were supported in establishing and managing nurseries. The plants grown by these groups were used for the reforestation of forest and riverbank areas and simultaneously provided an income source. A total of 70 women were involved in the nursery establishment. In April 2024, with support from the project, the women established a women-led cooperative, which was strengthened through training and consultations aimed at developing their organizational structures.   <\/p><p>Sustainable water management was also a central component of the project. To protect rivers and riverbanks, green buffer strips were created along the Pengabuan River to reduce the cultivation of oil palms up to the riverbank. The traditional method &#8220;Lubuk Larangan&#8221; allowed local communities to regulate fishing in designated protected zones. In the second phase, three additional villages adopted this method, and a study on water quality and the impacts of &#8220;Lubuk Larangan&#8221; was successfully conducted. Special attention was given to engaging young people in water protection measures.    <\/p><figure id=\"attachment_7670\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7670\" style=\"width: 1160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7670 size-full-thumb\" src=\"https:\/\/forumpalmoel.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/37-1160x700.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1160\" height=\"700\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7670\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Members of a youth organization in the village of Lubuk Lawas plant seedlings to protect the banks of the Pengabuan River.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Moreover, the project offered training on regenerative agriculture practices, including the production and use of organic fertilizers. In the first phase, 536 smallholders from RSPO-certified cooperatives participated, and in the second phase, an additional 200 participants from the Tebo district joined. By the end of the project, 42% of participants had adopted these sustainable practices.   <\/p><figure id=\"attachment_7672\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7672\" style=\"width: 1160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7672 size-full-thumb\" src=\"https:\/\/forumpalmoel.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/35-1160x700.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1160\" height=\"700\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7672\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Smallholder Netti working on the oil palm plantation.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>A new focus in the second phase was the collection of GPS and polygon data, as well as profiles of smallholders in the project area. The implementation organizations collaborated with KOLTIVA for this purpose. Geolocation data enhances traceability and is fundamental for certification and international regulations such as the EU regulation on deforestation-free products (EUDR). The project successfully collected GPS and polygon data from about 1,350 smallholders across two project districts.   <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-de32a88 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"de32a88\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Way Forward<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f0c80b7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f0c80b7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The project was financed through member contributions, which were matched by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). With the successful completion of the project, FONAP has made a strong statement in support of sustainable palm oil production and landscape conservation in Indonesia. We thank our local project partners for their excellent collaboration.  <\/p><p>In our commitment to sustainable palm oil supply chains, we place great value on direct engagement in the producing countries, focusing especially on smallholder farmers. Therefore, we are continuing our efforts beyond this project and already have new initiatives with Wild Asia in Malaysia and beyond in the planning stages that foster close collaboration with stakeholders at the beginning of the supply chain, aiming to create sustainable change.
