New FONAP e.V. pilot project supports smallholders in Indonesia<\/strong><\/p>\n

27 members of the Forum for Sustainable Palm Oil (FONAP) are intensifying their engagement in Indonesia, the largest producer market for palm oil. Together with the palm oil forum for smallholders based there, FORTASBI, they are implementing a new pilot project on Sumatra in the province of Jambi. Locally, the project is being carried out in close cooperation with the non-governmental organisations Setara Jambi and Cappa. In the sixth year after FONAP was founded, the FONAP members are thus setting a concrete example of what a sustainable palm oil economy can look like.<\/p>\n

A pilot project initially designed for twelve months is intended to support smallholders in oil palm cultivation in farming more sustainably. The project pursues concrete ecological and social goals: measures are planned to conserve the forest in the framework of so-called social forestry, whereby, for example, alternative sources of income are opened up for the village community through the complementary cultivation of native crops. These plants are raised by local women\u2019s groups, who thus have the opportunity to earn their own income. To improve the water quality of the local Pengabuan River, green buffer strips are to be created along the riparian zones. For this purpose, it is intended to establish a joint binding regulatory and action framework in a local multi-stakeholder process with the communities concerned, the farmers, other business partners, civil society and politics as well as administration. The entire process is to be accompanied scientifically. In addition, a regenerative agriculture concept in oil palm cultivation promotes soil health: on demonstration plots, the participating farmers learn to build up organic fertiliser and their own humus from cow manure and empty palm fruit bunches.<\/p>\n

The project region on the island of Sumatra borders Bukit Tiga Puluh National Park, which is considered one of the last refuges for threatened species such as the Sumatran orangutan, the Sumatran tiger and the Sumatran elephant. The work on the ground is intended in the medium term to help ensure that the buffer zone in front of the park is maintained and that disturbing influences, which also stem from non-sustainable oil palm cultivation, are minimised.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith the pilot project we are planning, we are pursuing for the first time an approach that also involves local government and administrative structures and is intended to take effect across a larger, contiguous area,\u201d explains Vice Chair Sascha Tischer.<\/p>\n

\u201cDeforestation is a problem of global significance.
