Two different oils can be extracted from the fruit of the oil palm: palm oil from the flesh of the fruit and palm kernel oil from the kernels. To obtain the palm oil, the fruit is sterilised to deactivate enzymes and thus prevent the fruit from spoiling, and then pressed. The result is crude palm oil (CPO). The fruits and the crude oil have an orange-red colour due to their high carotene content. To obtain palm kernel oil, the kernels are dried, partly ground and then pressed. This preserves the existing biodiversity and ensures that no areas are ploughed up, cleared or drained for the oil palm plantations. In addition to coconut fat, palm fat is the only vegetable fat that has a solid consistency at room temperature. This property makes it suitable for products for which a hardened fat would otherwise have to be used. Palm fat, for example, has a major advantage over butter: it has a very long shelf life. Also, butter is of animal origin and therefore out of the question for more and more consumers following a vegan diet. Another advantage of palm fat is that it is neutral in taste &#8211; unlike coconut oil, for example, which usually has its own flavour. Against the backdrop of a growing world population, economic growth in consumer countries &#8211; especially China and India &#8211; and rising demand for food, this high acreage output is an important prerequisite for meeting the global demand for vegetable oils. The promotion of other vegetable oils, on the other hand, would lead to displacement effects and thus to similar problems in other countries around the world &#8211; for example, rainforest clearance for soy cultivation in Brazil. These are intended to minimise rainforest deforestation, slash-and-burn agriculture and human rights violations in palm oil cultivation and, in the long term, to prevent them altogether. The criteria of the certification systems are designed to ensure that the fundamental rights of indigenous landowners, local communities, farm workers, smallholders and their families are respected and fully taken into account. However, rainforest deforestation cannot be stopped by certification systems alone. It is the task of the governments in the respective producing countries to apply and further improve legislation for sustainable raw material production. In addition, the producing countries must be supported in building up the corresponding capacities. Furthermore, palm oil processing companies can and must also fulfil their responsibility and ensure that their products do not contribute to further deforestation. Certified sustainable palm oil can be traded accordingly and labelled on products. The certification of sustainable palm oil is possible with various international certification systems. These include, among others, the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), International Sustainability &amp; Carbon Certification (ISCC), and Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB).<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-accordion-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-title-3557\" class=\"elementor-tab-title\" data-tab=\"7\" role=\"button\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-3557\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon elementor-accordion-icon-left\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-closed\"><i class=\"fas fa-plus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-opened\"><i class=\"fas fa-minus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a class=\"elementor-accordion-title\" tabindex=\"0\">What are the existing certification systems like and how do they differ?<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-3557\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"7\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-3557\"><p>Founded in 2004, the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) represents the entire value chain: producers, commodity traders, the processing industry, retailers, banks, investors and non-governmental organisations. The aim of the RSPO is to promote sustainable cultivation methods for palm oil and thus limit environmental damage. Its members support sustainable agriculture that contributes to the preservation of existing biodiversity. The aim is to ensure that fewer forests are cleared and the rights of smallholder farmers and workers are respected.<\/p><p>The RSPO criteria, which were developed in a multi-stakeholder approach, include compliance with local, national and ratified international laws, as well as environmental standards for soil, water and waste management and pesticide use. The focus is also on the conservation of natural resources and the preservation of biodiversity. Slash-and-burn is prohibited. No new plantations may be established in areas of primary forest or forests of high conservation value after November 2005. In addition, independent studies must be carried out on the possible negative effects of establishing new plantations. The rights of the local population, social standards for working conditions, trade union freedom, the ban on child labour and discrimination must be respected.<\/p><p>The ISCC International Sustainability &amp; Carbon Certification (ISCC) is a certification system which, in addition to the RSPO criteria, also takes into account the requirements of the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED) and the resulting German sustainability regulations for the use of biomass as an energy source in Germany. The development of the ISCC was funded by the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) via the Agency for Renewable Resources (FNR) and developed as a research project with industry participation.<\/p><p>The ISCC standard takes into account various criteria such as the protection of areas with high conservation value, sustainable land management, greenhouse gas reduction to protect soil, water and air, and the application of good agricultural practice. In addition, the application of good management practices, compliance with safe working conditions and social sustainability must be demonstrated. Finally, certification also requires compliance with relevant international conventions and national laws.<\/p><p>The Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) is a multi-stakeholder initiative in the form of a roundtable whose scope is not limited either geographically or in terms of goods. Founded in 2007 as &#8220;The Roundtable on Sustainable Biofuels&#8221; by the Ecole Polytechnique F\u00e9d\u00e9rale de Lausanne (EPFL), the RSB was formally transformed into an independent non-profit organisation based in Geneva, Switzerland, on 1 January 2013 and changed its name to &#8220;The Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials&#8221; on 18 March.<\/p><p>The Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials is an open membership organisation made up of producers, industry representatives, NGOs, governments and intergovernmental organisations. The standard was developed in accordance with the ISEAL Code of Good Practice for Setting Social and Environmental Standards The RSB is the only international initiative to develop an international standard and certification system for agrofuels. This is a complex process in which local interest groups are also involved in the various processes. The criteria defined in the systems are checked on site on the plantations and in the facilities. Why is the RSPO accepted by FONAP?<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-3559\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"9\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-3559\"><p>The RSPO guidelines set out a strict framework that producers must follow. Nevertheless, there are justified points of criticism of the RSPO, which FONAP and many of its members are working on individually. Nevertheless, direct positive effects of RSPO-certified sustainable production have been observed and proven.<\/p><p>The GIZ project &#8220;Sustainable palm oil production in Thailand&#8221; (2009-2012), financed by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU), supported smallholders on their way to RSPO certification. The occupational safety measures for the use of pesticides were rigorously adhered to.<\/p><p>The smallholders were able to increase their income by up to 50 per cent thanks to higher yields as well as quality and sustainability premiums. Positive effects on biodiversity in the plantations have also been observed: Owls and other birds have returned to the plantations. The example shows that palm oil production in accordance with the RSPO standard is sustainable and can benefit farmers and a diverse agricultural landscape.<\/p><p>In the &#8220;Sustainable and Climate-Friendly Palm Oil Production and Procurement (SCPOPP)&#8221; project, which is also funded by the BMU, small palm oil-producing farmers are to be supported in obtaining certification in accordance with an internationally recognised standard by means of comprehensive training courses.<\/p><p>However, it is also clear that there is a need for further improvement in the certification standards and their implementation. FONAP works continuously to improve both the RSPO and the ISCC.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-accordion-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-title-35510\" class=\"elementor-tab-title\" data-tab=\"10\" role=\"button\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-35510\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon elementor-accordion-icon-left\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-closed\"><i class=\"fas fa-plus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-opened\"><i class=\"fas fa-minus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a class=\"elementor-accordion-title\" tabindex=\"0\">What are the chances that the RSPO will continue to improve?<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-35510\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"10\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-35510\"><p>There are always discussions within the RSPO and among its members about how and where improvements are necessary and can be achieved. The suspension of the IOI Group in 2016 shows that the RSPO is willing to contribute to greater transparency and to impose stricter sanctions for compliance with standards and criteria in future &#8211; even though the process has been criticised for being too slow.<\/p>\n<p>The Forum Nachhaltiges Palm\u00f6l e.V. is actively involved in improving existing certification systems. The adoption of a FONAP resolution at the RSPO General Assembly shows that it is possible to improve certification systems. In the past, there have always been members of the RSPO who have converted areas with a high &#8220;conservation value&#8221; &#8211; so-called High Conservation Value Areas (HCV) &#8211; into plantations contrary to the regulations. Until now, companies that cleared areas after 2005 without an HCV audit as prescribed by the RSPO were able to submit an action plan for compensation and have these areas subsequently certified. However, it remains unclear which and how many areas are specifically affected. At the RSPO General Assembly in 2016, FONAP successfully introduced a resolution to the RSPO with the aim of further increasing the transparency of the certification system. In future, members of the RSPO will have to disclose whether they have converted rainforest areas into plantations after 2005 and how they are compensating for this.<\/p>\n<p>The RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil) has also introduced additional criteria for sustainable palm oil production as a voluntary supplement. RSPO NEXT, which was introduced at the insistence of some members, is intended to further strengthen the fight against deforestation, greenhouse gas emissions and for human rights. The voluntary initiative for RSPO members goes beyond the current RSPO criteria.<\/p>\n<p>In 2018, the RSPO revised its certification standard (RSPO P&amp;C) after an 18-month revision process. A smallholder standard is also being developed. In the major producing countries such as Indonesia and Malaysia, smallholders account for around 40 per cent of palm oil production. FONAP closely accompanied this process and was represented by Andreas Knoell as a representative of the consumer goods sector in five rounds of negotiations.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-accordion-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-title-35511\" class=\"elementor-tab-title\" data-tab=\"11\" role=\"button\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-35511\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon elementor-accordion-icon-left\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-closed\"><i class=\"fas fa-plus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-opened\"><i class=\"fas fa-minus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a class=\"elementor-accordion-title\" tabindex=\"0\">A large proportion of the certified palm oil available on the world market is not purchased, is that right?<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-35511\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"11\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-35511\"><div class=\"pane\">\n<div class=\"accordion\">\n<p>That is correct. Although 100 per cent of the certified palm kernel oil available worldwide is already purchased as a physical product, only around 50 per cent of the certified palm oil is in demand. The producers are therefore clearly criticising the buyers. They question whether a demand for further tightening of the criteria is acceptable given this low demand.
