Additionally, they pursue demanding additional criteria.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Voluntary Commitment of<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FONAP members<\/span> comprises three pillars: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p><ol><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Converting to sustainably certified palm oil and palm kernel oil, as well as fractions and derivatives<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supplier dialogues on the topics of traceability and the achievement of the Additional Criteria<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Detailed reporting on the achievement of goals<\/span><\/li><\/ol><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FONAP currently recognises three certification schemes: RSPO, ISCC+ and RSB.<\/span><\/p><p>Since 2025, organic certification has also been recognized in combination with RSPO Mass Balance or the Union for Ethical Biotrade (UEBT). Nevertheless, they all have room for improvement, particularly in terms of transparency and concrete requirements. Mitigating the negative impacts of palm oil cultivation on biodiversity; including ecosystems<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-2141\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"1\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-2141\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Members are committed to mitigating the negative impacts of palm oil cultivation on biodiversity. Various means can be used to achieve this.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">establishing biodiversity corridors, also on the plantations, or<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">networking habitats within the palm oil dominated landscape, or<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increasing agrobiodiversity on the plantations.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-accordion-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-title-2142\" class=\"elementor-tab-title\" data-tab=\"2\" role=\"button\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-2142\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon elementor-accordion-icon-left\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-closed\"><i class=\"fas fa-plus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-opened\"><i class=\"fas fa-minus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a class=\"elementor-accordion-title\" tabindex=\"0\">2. Supporting and integrating smallholders into global supply chains<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-2142\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"2\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-2142\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Worldwide, at least five million smallholders are involved in palm oil production. FONAP is committed to integrating small-scale producers into global supply chains. By gaining access to higher-priced markets, they can increase their income and thereby improve their living conditions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are several ways for members to meet this criterion:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by actively supporting smallholders, for example through projects<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by purchasing smallholder crops directly through certified enterprises within the supply chain<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by purchasing Independent Smallholder Certificates through certified enterprises within the supply chain<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">through the producers&#8217; own support programmes.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-accordion-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-title-2143\" class=\"elementor-tab-title\" data-tab=\"3\" role=\"button\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-2143\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon elementor-accordion-icon-left\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-closed\"><i class=\"fas fa-plus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-opened\"><i class=\"fas fa-minus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a class=\"elementor-accordion-title\" tabindex=\"0\">3. Stopping cultivation on peatlands and other high-carbon soil areas<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-5481\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"1\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-5481\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FONAP calls for a clear and complete ban on palm oil plantations on peatlands of any depth and other high-carbon soils to curb the huge release of greenhouse gases and preserve the ecological benefits of peatlands. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As this requirement is however not yet included in all the current standards recognised by FONAP, FONAP members are committed to ensuring that the palm oil sourced in their supply chain does not come from any newly cultivated peatland areas nor other high-carbon soil areas. With regards to palm oil sourced from plantations that already exist on peatlands, it is important to ensure that restoration measures are carried out, or at least considered, as part of the replanting of the plantations after 25 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-accordion-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-title-5482\" class=\"elementor-tab-title\" data-tab=\"2\" role=\"button\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-5482\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon elementor-accordion-icon-left\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-closed\"><i class=\"fas fa-plus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-opened\"><i class=\"fas fa-minus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a class=\"elementor-accordion-title\" tabindex=\"0\">2. Stopping the use of highly hazardous pesticides<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-5482\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"2\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-5482\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to the health and environmental risks associated with pesticides, FONAP is committed to banning the use of highly hazardous pesticides in palm oil production. This applies in particular to the herbicide Paraquat, the pesticides listed in the annex to the Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions and those classified by the WHO as &#8220;extremely hazardous&#8221; (WHO class 1A) or &#8220;highly hazardous&#8221; (WHO class 1B).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-accordion-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-title-5483\" class=\"elementor-tab-title\" data-tab=\"3\" role=\"button\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-5483\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon elementor-accordion-icon-left\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-closed\"><i class=\"fas fa-plus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-opened\"><i class=\"fas fa-minus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a class=\"elementor-accordion-title\" tabindex=\"0\">3. The application of strict greenhouse gas reduction targets<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-5483\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"3\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-5483\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the reduction of greenhouse gases has not yet been set as a target for all the certification systems, the palm oil using market has an important role to play in demanding the reduction of emissions. Additionally, palm oil production in palm oil mills produces large quantities of the climate-damaging greenhouse gas methane. This can be captured and rendered harmless by applied technologies such as biogas plants. FONAP members are already calling on their palm oil-producing suppliers to continuously reduce greenhouse gases and are holding intensive discussions with them to this end.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-accordion-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-title-5484\" class=\"elementor-tab-title\" data-tab=\"4\" role=\"button\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-5484\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon elementor-accordion-icon-left\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-closed\"><i class=\"fas fa-plus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-accordion-icon-opened\"><i class=\"fas fa-minus\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a class=\"elementor-accordion-title\" tabindex=\"0\">4. Using legally grown oil palm fruits (fresh fruit bunches) to the exclusion of all others<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-5484\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"4\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-5484\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most mills that still produce using the mass balancing approach have so far sourced both certified and conventionally produced oil fruits, which are known as Fresh Fruit Bunches (FFB). In order to counteract the illegal cultivation of FFBs, FONAP has included as a criterion the requirement to ensure that certified palm oil mills also purchase non-certified FFBs exclusively from legal cultivation.
