According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/ipad.fas.usda.gov\/cropexplorer\/cropview\/commodityView.aspx?cropid=4243000&amp;sel_year=2022&amp;rankby=Production\">United States Department of\n Agriculture (2023)<\/a>, around 78 million tonnes of palm oil\nwere produced worldwide in 2022. The main growing regions are Indonesia and Malaysia, which produce around 65 million\ntonnes of palm oil, about 83% of the palm oil produced worldwide. In Indonesia alone,\noil palms grow on almost 14 million hectares \u2013 an area more than three\ntimes the size of Switzerland (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.indexmundi.com\/agriculture\/?commodity=palm-oil&amp;graph=area-harvested\">IndexMundi, 2023<\/a>). However, their prevalence is also increasing in\nSouth America and Africa.\nAt 57% and 32% respectively, Indonesia and Malaysia are also the <a href=\"https:\/\/de.statista.com\/statistik\/daten\/studie\/1177668\/umfrage\/fuehrende-exportlaender-von-palmoel-weltweit-exportmenge\/\">leading exporters \nworldwide.<\/a> After India (19%) and China (15%), the European Union\nis the world&#8217;s third largest import market for palm oil at 10% and 4.8 million tonnes\n(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.indexmundi.com\/agriculture\/?commodity=palm-oil&amp;graph=imports\">IndexMundi, 2023<\/a>). In 2021\/22 most of the palm oil was consumed by Indonesia (18.9\nmillion tonnes), India (8.35 million tonnes), China (5.05 million tonnes) and the\nEU (5.75 million tonnes).\nGlobally, 65% of palm oil is used in the food sector and 31%\nin industry. The palm fruit gets its reddish colour due to its \nbeta-carotin content. During the refining process this colouration is removed.\nThe palm fruit has a high fat content with its 45% to 60% total fat. \nValuable oils are extracted from both the flesh and the kernel of the \noil palm fruit: palm oil from the flesh, and the solid palm kernel oil from the kernels of the \nfruit. It is extracted from the yellow to orange-coloured flesh of the fruit. Shortly before harvesting, the oil content of the fruit is at its highest: at that time it is between 45% and 50%. After harvesting, the ripe fruits are sterilised to deactivate enzymes and are pressed. This produces crude palm oil (CPO).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Palm oil is tasteless and heat-stable, making it good for cooking, baking, and frying. This is traditionally done in Indonesia and West African countries, among others. Due to its high energy content, it is however also suitable as a fuel. Additionally, palm oil is also used for the production of candles, cosmetic products and detergents. Palm kernel oil, like coconut oil, falls under the category of lauric oils, i.e. it contains up to 80% of the saturated fatty acid, lauric acid, in a bonded form.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At room temperature, the palm kernel fat is solid and does not need to be chemically hardened. This makes it particularly spreadable. Due to its consistency, palm kernel oil is mainly used in the confectionery industry. It is prized for its properties to function as a carrier for flavours and vitamins, which could not be introduced into the food without the use of palm kernel oil. It is also in high demand by the cosmetics and detergent industry because of its special properties which, when comparing to other vegetable oils, can only be found in coconut oil. Detergent substances obtained from palm kernel oil can be found as so-called surfactants in shampoos, detergents or cleaning agents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around 8.7 million tonnes of palm kernel oil were produced worldwide in 2019. About 8% of the globally traded palm kernel oil ends up in Germany. The largest share of palm oil consumption, namely 726,397 tonnes, was attributable to energy production and primarily within the transport sector.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This proportion has fallen significantly since then. Since January 2023, the blending of palm oil in Germany has no longer counted towards the greenhouse gas reduction quota. Consequently, the raw material is now hardly used for the production of biodiesel.
